What is a resume

Getting a job is nothing but selling yourself to the prospective employer or winning them, and the first step in this process is your resume. It is a means for you to present yourself to  the prospective employer through a short description of your personality and qualifications. It is a piece of paper having details your personal background in such as way as to generate enough interest in the mind of the employer to ask you to meet face to face. When you apply for any sort of job it is your resume that creates first impression and provokes the employer to call you for an interview. Resume is the document that portrays your personality before the employer and a bad representation in the resume may harm you a lot and the chance to appear in an interview may elude you forever. Essentially, there are two parts of the resume, the first being covering letter, and the second being the resume itself. Covering letter is has its own importance if you are residing in the American sub-continent, as the covering letter introduces you for the first time to the employer.

You may be having excellent qualifications and the most suitable person for the advertised post but if your resume is poor then there is a remote chance of getting an interview call from the employer. On the contrary if your qualifications are not that good but you are capable of creating a very strong resume then you are bound to get the interview call from the employers. Usually the covering letter is the summarized form of your resume wherein you can highlight the main points of your resume and make a stress on the important points besides introducing  and describing your personality before your would be employer. If you are able to create an impressive covering letter then your job is half done and it will ensure that your resume gets a careful scrutiny. A strong resume  always brightens your chances for an interview.

There are certain basic rules for creating a powerful resume. This document is divided into several sections. For the benefit of the readers we would like to explain each of the sections briefly. First  heading is the contact  Information. It is quite essential for you to display prominently your contact details. Usually it should be written using bold letters and includes your name in bold print, your contact information like address, phone number(s), email address etc. Next heading on the resume focuses on the objective, your target should be to concentrate on the position you want, hence it si better to explain here what you can do for the employer and it is always better if your explanation is  concise. Ext is the description of your education, you can list the name of your degree and certification that you have obtained or in the process of obtaining with relevant month and year of graduation and your major and minor(s). Next is to describe your work experience along with  your job title, the name of the organization you worked for and the dates of your employment. These are the main sections of any resume. If you want then you can describe your Achievements, Hobbies, Reference under the proper headings. But never forget to be precise and to the point.
